Performance in temperature extremes

CR123 lithium cells are specified to operate roughly between -40° and +60°C (-40° to 140°F). While efficiency can be reduced near the lowest extreme (around -40°C), they remain significantly more effective than typical alkaline cells down to about -20°C (-4°F), which makes them well suited for outdoor detectors and cold environments.

Comparison with alkaline batteries

In many practical uses, lithium CR123 cells provide substantially longer service life than alkaline equivalents—commonly quoted as 6–8× longer under similar loads. Although the upfront cost is higher (often 2–4×), lithium cells frequently deliver better value where long life and low-temperature performance are required.
